Combined APU / parking heater (CAP Unit)
The transport sector is facing the problem that the battery capacity of long distance trucks is insufficient to keep up with the fast growing electricity demand. Idling the main engine - during rest periods - is often used to generate the required electrical power. This results in unwanted noise levels, pollution, engine wear and high fuel consumption.
MTT CAP Unit on a long distance truck
MTT is developing a low cost and reliable APU (Auxiliary Power Unit) that enables the truck driver to generate (up to) 3 kW of stable electricity during his rest period. It will be combined with a parking heater that will generate up to 6 kW of thermal power to be used for cabin heating and main engine preheating.
Recent studies show that the investment in a CAP unit will have a payback time of approximately 12 - 18 months.
